Hi....i was recently given a cd-24d 6hp johnson motor and unfortunatly I have very limited experience working on outboards(none). The motor has not been started in 3 years. At this time i have replaced the spark plugs and have found that the top cylinder is getting no spark. Im uncertain on the best way to trouble shoot from here out without wasting a lot of time and money. I will be greatfull for any info you can give me.

If one cylinder is not getting spark, then you will have to pull the flywheel and replace some parts. Usually I replace both coils, points and condensers.
Some instructions here:

Parts available at iBoats

Find the thread in the forum FAQ called "waking a sleeping outboard" for guidelines on what to do to get the motor running. First thing to do is run a compression check to see if the motor is even worth fooling with.

If the motor hasn't been run in three years, you probably need to do a carburetor rebuild and water pump impeller replacement too. The fuel pump diaphragm could be rotted, as well. I also recommend checking the gearcase lube for water/metal shavings. If there are no signs of either, just go ahead and replace the lube.

The first place to start is in getting a factory service manual. You can most likely get one right here at iboats. Parts should be available too.

The good news is that these are very simple engines and the required work is neither difficult or particularly expensive.
