1967 80 hp lower unit swaps?

I just picked up a 1967 Johnson 80hp V4. It's a long shaft and has a problem with the electric shift lower unit (won't go into either forward or reverse).

I'd like to go to a short shaft, where do I find info on what other year/model lower units will fit this? (would like reference, or book to buy as I also have a 1960 40hp Evinrude Lark II I want to change over to short shaft).

Or should I just take the lower unit off and see if it's something simple that's causing the no shift problem?

Other suggestions (besides jack plate, please) are welcome.

it is actually simpler to make a simple jack plate than do the conversion.

Any of the electric shift V-4 Evinrude or Johnson motors of similar gearcase shape will work. They came out in 1963 (I think) and ran through 1968. It is easy to shorten. The main thing you need is the shorter drive shaft. The water tubes can be cut off 5". The electric shift wire works in both long and short. Job-wise, it's the same as doing a water pump repair.

Before you condem the lower unit, ALWAYS check it out electrically first. The shift switch in the remote control is very troublesome. They are hard to find and very expensive. I know where there is a new one. PM me if you need it. But I won't be able to reply till next week.

The lower unit must use special BRP Premium Blend Gear Oil...nothing else.

You might as well decide right now to buy a factory service manual. You already need it to check the shift circuit. outboardbooks.com is the place to find them.
