Hello there

I am a novice, so please bear with me...

I have a 1967 9.2hp SeaKing (model vwb27909a), made by Chrysler marine that recently was given to us by a friend. Motor ran fine for awhile (2-3 hours), then all of the sudden lost power (as i was running it). RPMs seemed to be ok (do not remember a drop or increase in rpms at time of power loss). It was running well and then all of the sudden it wouldn't go. When I pulled the motor, it also looked like the lower unit might have been leaking gearcase oil. So... question is, does this sound like a water pump and/or lower unit seal issue? Any ideas? Also, I am not sure we are using the right fuel/oil mixture. We were using standard 50:1, but after several posts I've seen here, that doesn't appear to be right. Hope I didn't ruin it.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
C

Re: 1967 9.2hp Sea King power problem

You should be ok with 48:1 and 50:1 isnt likely to have caused your problem. If the power loss was like someone turned off a switch You may have lost spark to one cylinder. If you saw a sort of black sludge on the lower unit it was most likely exhaust residue. If the gearcase leaks lube there will be water in the gearcase or the lube will appear milky. You should drain and check the lube anyway. If the motor sat alot you could also have a gunked up fuel system.
You can check which cylinder is bad by grounding the plug wires one at a time and try to start it. If only one cylinder has spark when you ground that one it won't run.If it was an over heat problem it would have slowed gradually
like something was dragging it down. And if you didn't turn it off it most likely would have seized tight and stopped with a death rattle.
You should replace the impeller just because you don't know the condition and one overheat can
cook your motor. When you get it running CAREFULLY put your hand on the cylinder head.It should be too hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you.

Thanks Spike,

Going to change out the impeller, lower unit lube, and check the fuel system/spark as you suggested. I will let you know how it goes.

C
