I just changed water impeller and having a problem installing the water tube.

When the lower unit was removed the tube came out of the housing, I try to put it back up in the housing and can't attach it? Also when the lower unit came off, along with the water tube a spring washer came off also. Any ideas.

Does anything have go on the top of the water tube before putting back in housing?

Thanks for helping,
John

With a flashlight to see the hole and a set of needlenose pliers the tube should slide back in the hole and the grommet retain it while the unit is reinstalled. I don't quite understand what you mean by a spring washer?

Thanks for taking the time.

Just to be sure, at the water pump housing, there should be rubber washer inside the top hole and the white tube goes in there? Let me know if that is correct.

The spring seal looks like it came out af an oil seal, when we lowered the unit it was was sliding on the driveshaft?

Thanks again,
John.

There are lip seal up under the powerhead on the driveshaft. Thats not a good sign to see that the garter spring came off. You are as risk of inhaling water up into the lower crankshaft bearing. There's two lip seal there in tandem and you -may- be ok with just the one performaing properly, but I'd consider pulling the powerhead to replace them.

Any signs of moisture on plug #6 after you run it?

You can re-install the water tube from below. As mentioned you just need some patience and some luck. You can see the grommet under the powerhead with a flashlight from below. Try not to damage the rubber grommet.

Good luck.

Thanks for helping.

Everything was going fine until I struggled with the shift shaft alignment.

After several tries making sure the upper and lower shaft were connecting, I
kept having problems testing the gear shift. It won't come out of forward?

I noticed that when the lower unit was off that the shaft will rotate left/right.

Before attempting again, is there a way to make sure the shaft is in the right gear position? ie. should I rotate the shaft all the way counterclockwise or clockwise?

Thanks for helping.

Re: 1967 950SS Mercury Water Tube install

Hello,

I finally got everything together and got to the point to start.

I have a flush device connected and ran the motor.

I am only seeing a trickle of water come out?

I assume this is not good. ANY ADVICE?

THANKS
