Hi all, First of all I want to mention that my knowledge in outboards is almost zero so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just got my first outboard, cleaned the carburetor and starter and took it on the water but I noticed few problems that I am trying to fix for 2 weeks now but couldn't find proper information. Here they are:

1. At high speed it starts accelerating nice but then slows down by itself then again accelerates then slows down again and so on. Could the problem be the fact that fuel system is not tight and air might get in the system or there could be a more deep problem?
2. I noticed there is no generator attached, is this by design for this motor? Can I easily attach a generator to it and make it work? If yes, how and where could I find such a generator?
3. Since this is an old outboard and probably haven't been used in a long time, is there anything I must do to it before use (usually don't like to fix something as long as it's working fine).

Dan

Hi Dan, if this motors been sitting awhile you should replace the water pump, change the l/u oil remove and clean the carb, new spark plugs, new fuel 50:1 mix you may also check the fuel lines, replace if needed

Thanks a lot Jim, looks like I can't avoid the hard work :) .

My next questions would then be where can I find a water pump to fit my outboard and all the seals that will be needed after that? How much should I expect it to cost? If too expensive, isn't it possible to fix existing pump, or isn't there any chance that the pump is still good and how can I check that besides the fact the motor does not overheat?
Is there a good way to clean the carb without opening the whole engine?

you may not need seals check the l/u oil for water as for the water pump ,if you don't know when it was last replaced. then its good to change it, only a few dollars you should replace the seals on the vent/fill screws that the first place water enters the l/u oil. only 2-3 bucks as far as the carbs go the only way to clean them up is to take them apart, soak in carb cleaner and blow out all passages with compressed air not a real bad job at all.also you will need a repair manual, you can find them on e-bay or right here on iboats, check out the top of this page click on parts, see if they have what you need or if you have a napa auto parts near. lots of great people here to help you out. cost less than $100.00

This sounds great. I want to make this engine run like new so I will start getting the parts for it since it does not look that expensive. There is a NAPA store near my place (Bellevue - Seattle) and I wonder if they have all these parts but otherwise will look on iboats for more help on this. I already got about 15 books from the library and there seem to be lots of info. I already bought a flywheel puller but I am wondering if there are any other special tools that I will need to buy.

Thanks a bunch Jim, honestly this kind of forums are amazing and I don't think they exist elsewhere. Great people !!

Sorry forgot about the second important thing which is the Generator. I saw similar models having a generator attached and driven through a belt but my outboard does not have it. Does anybody know if it is possible to find and mount such a generator to this outboard model?

those old generators really don't do a good job on charging the bat. get yourself a good marine bat. I have 2 on my boat 1 for elect.troll. motor 1 just for the starter, never needed to put a charge on that one yet. you can check twin city outboard for used parts

Jim's right. You don't need a generator. Your starting battery, fully-charged will start your engine many dozens of times, and the generators for those old outboards didn't do much anyhow. There's no way they'd do anything for a trolling motor battery, for example.

Just buy a good smart charger to use at home. You can actually leave a smart charger hooked up all the time your boat is parked and not do any harm to your batteries. Just remember to unhook it before driving off with the boat and trailer. :D
