Hi, I have a clean 1967 33 ski twin that purrs like a kitty (33752C). I've had it for 3 or 4 seasons. The previous owners used it as a hunt camp motor and thought they could save themselves some trouble by filling the gear case with some sort of white grease, Lithium I'm assuming. Well, of course the shaft seal blew and it started slow leaking grease. It also blew a head gasket late last season which I patched with a lark 40 big twin gasket (still purrs). As of Friday I should have new gear seals, head gasket and impeller ( old one worked but has major cracks in one vane). So my question is: What should I flush the gear case with before I re-seal and add actual gear oil? Should I strip the bearings with something strong and flush with gear oil before adding gear oil?

The gearcase should come apart for cleaning of old grease.------You might want to pressure test BEFORE taking gearcase apart.------Do not overlook the o-ring seal on the shift rod.-----Not sure how you could fit a 40 hp head gasket on that.

Is it possible the 33 and the 40 are the same bore and stroke? the gasket has the same pattern but the coolant ports are split on the 40 and its one port on the 33 so there is some differences but they don't prevent cooling from occurring as of right now. I don't want to play around any longer so I bought the actual gasket, hard to find though.

How would I differentiate between a blown shaft or shift seal? could the prop shaft seal also be blown?

33 and 40 are same stroke, but not same bore. 40 is larger of course. A Gale 40 has the same head gasket pattern as the E/J 33, but larger bore size.

EDIT. I believe it was about 1973 that E/J 40hp motors started using the Gale powerhead, so add those to the above statement.

1971 was the year they dropped the high end 40s

the difference in bore is 0.13". Runs well and spits good water, I took it for a spin a few times last season with the 40hp gasket in the head. I hope I didn't mess the rings, Ill report back.

The 40 h.p. gasket never caused me any problems, as the rings lay beneath the head gasket at top dead. the larger gasket simply created a gap between the cylinder walls and the gasket. Long term use may have proven taxing on the cylinder walls where this gap was present, but as a temporary fix it seemed to work without a problem.
