I'm in the process of doing a water pump rebuild. I've dropped the lower unit enough to remove the shift rod screw. That's as far as I can remove the LU. I don't really want to pry it off. I know what usually happens when something gets forced. Is there a trick to getting the LU off?

Sometimes you have to use a screw driver and open up the clamp after you remove the screw.
If you have dropped it enough to remove the screw, I can't think of anything holding it up.

The shift rod clamp came right off after I dropped the screw down in the LU after removing it. How much force do I use and where?

The shift rod came out of the clamp after you removed the screw?
If so maybe the water tube is holding you up. I have just pulled and twisted a little and they usually drop down. You could pry with slight pressure between the housings and see if it helps.

Hello there,

I had a similar problem dropping the LU on my 1962 10HP Sportwin. If you have removed all the bolts then all that is holding the LU up is the drive shaft tube where it enters the water pump, and the copper water pipe that also runs to the water pump. I could drop mine about 1/2 an inch and then used a length of soft wood whacked with a hammer to force it downwards, took 10mins before it dropped off, there was some serious sealant holding the drive shaft tube in.

I don't imagine that this is the recommended method, but if yours hasn't been removed in a number of years then it could be seriously gunked. Be careful what you lever with as you could easily damage an aluminium casing, hence me using wood.

Good luck!

Well, a little persistence with a wooden wedge and regardless of the gunk in the upper driveshaft spline she came apart. The spring seals in the rebuild kit ordered from iBoats were both wrong, WTF? Luckily the old ones were OK. Everything else in the kit was correct. Although a new O ring for the upper spline should've been included. Do I need to put any sealant on the lower water pump housing gasket or not? My OEM service manual is quite vague.

I think some manuals suggest using sealer, personally I don't use any on the pump gaskets.

Thanks everyone for your input. Another completed project with the help of the iboats gang.
