1967 evinrude sportwin 9.5 propshaft oil seal

I did a search for this and really didn't get a clear answer. I'm installing a new propshaft oil seal on my Sportwin 9.5. My question is, what direction should the seal face? Does anyone have a pic?

I found a Clymers manual for my 68 Evinrude 9.5 online and it has a diagram of the gearcase but it doesn't show an oil seal that needs to be installed in a certain direction. Are you saying your seal has different sides that need to be installed in a certain way?

Originally they were installed with the rubber facing inward to keep the oil from leaking out,but as the prop shafts grew older it sometimes worked better with the rubber facing out.
Nowadays they often leak a bit no matter what direction you put them in and for my 1964 9.5 I put 2 of them in there, one inward and one outward, back to back.I can do this because the seals sold today are a bit thinner than the ones from 50 years ago.

One side of the seal has a small round spring around it, put that side to the oil.

The seal I'm installing is in every way the same as the original except that the orig. is made up of brass and the new one is stainless steel. One side is sealed and the other side is open between the rubber w/ inner spring and the SS outer ring. Only one seal will fit as it takes up the complete depth of the oil seal bore.
