Hi everyone, I just purchased this motor and am now over the ignition issues, only to run into what seems like a fuel delivery problem since she starts on starter fluid but immediately shuts down. The fuel line to the carb looks bone dry on the inside so I'm guessing I'll be playing with the fuel pump tomorrow unless any of you have suggestions? Thanks!

sure when chasing a fuel problem always start from the source if you have a built in fuel tank start with the anti siphon valve on the tank and work your way up.

I've solved the fuel pump problem and now gas it pulsing to the carb inlet and filling the bowls but still not starting. I've checked the float adjustment and also blowed into the inlet while flipping the carb. It doesnt seem to be a complete seal when I turn it over, but does give some resistance. Is there a particular channel in the carb I should be checking for blockage or something?

Sounds like it time to rebuild the carb. It's easy to get a kit and go through the whole thing. It will save you time and future headaches.

Do you know where I can find a kit for this motor? It looks like it would cost a fortune to just go through the parts diagram on marineengine.com and buy all the floats and needles and gaskets, etc. The valves and seats are $50 ea, the floats are $20 ea. times all by 4! Should I just start with a set of new gaskets?

I'm rebuilding now, and I'm confused about the float settings in the manual. It says that, inverted, the float should be 9/16 from the chamber wall. Then, it says right side up, the float should be 17/16 from the same wall. Am I just having a brain fart, or is this seem super wrong since not only would it be half an inch further from the wall while open? There isn't even enough room in the chamber for that measurement. With the inverted adjustment made, the float sits right at the bottom of the chamber.

Dave,

What type of problems did you have with your ignition system? I am also having problems with mine. Not sure what parts to replace first.

Thanks a bunch,

Here's the service manual figure, and what I'm confused about. As you can see in the top image, the float falls against the needle and is 9/16" from the gasket surface. In the bottom image, you turn the carb right side up and the float falls against the tab. So, how would it then be 17/16" from the gasket surface? Also, it lists that measurement in the drawing of the carb, right next to the 5/16" measurement, and in the drawing those two measurements looks awfully similar to be correct. Anybody have any insight?
