I am new here and did do a search on kill switches but didn't find information specific to my motor. I think I can add it using the wiring at the ignition switch but don't know which wires and do I hook it up in series opening the ignition power circuit? Any tips would be much appreciated. Also if I want to add a tach, what are the pulses coming from this alternator, I do have a black and grey wire both hanging behind the ignition switch. Back in the day, did they offer a tach as an option to go into the round area beside the ignition switch?

Re: 1967 Johnson 60hp adding a kill switch

There is a stack of red wires on the IGN terminal of the key switch. One of them, red & white stripe, goes to the big cable going back to the motor. That is the ignition feed. It is automotive battery ignition, not to be confused with the more modern CD ignition. Probably takes a different kill switch (?).

The grey wire is tach signal, black is ground. However, as it came from the factory, the grey wire goes to the coil, not the alternator. If you leave it wired to the coil, it takes an automotive type tach (8 cylinder because it is a two-stroke firing twice as often). If you want to use a modern alternator driven tach, you need to take the grey wire off the coil and attach it to one of the yellow wires at the rectifier (leave it connected to the rectifier also).

Yes, at one time there was an OMC tach that would fit the 2 1/6 hole. You probably won't find one now. BUT Harbor Freight has an automotive one that size.

Thank-you for your reply. I will order a manual and look at the wiring diagram but I think if the ignition power is interupted that should do it.
Regarding the tach, if as you say an 8 cyl automotive type will work without changing the connection at the motor I would prefer to go that way. I will look up Harbour Freight.
