Thanks to all for your patience. I have a 1967 CD24S 6hp. It runs good but today I changed plugs and started it up in a bucket and noticed no water or mist. Engine runs hot to touch. I suspect the impeller but don't know for sure. Is there any quick way to check it? I don't have an engine diagram so I really don't understand the route the water flows? How do I find the water line and run a wire through it? Also, the evinrude site only goes back to 68. Would the impeller kit be the same? I don't know where the water pump is either? I know I sound really stupid but I'm just not familiar with outboard engines? Thanks orren

In reality from what you say in your post you need a manual before starting any repairs. You have to drop the lower unit to get to the water pump. It is a fairly inexpensive job to have a marine mechanic do if you choose not to tackle it yourself.

The first thing you need to do is get it out of that bucket and on a boat in the lake. There might not be anything wrong with it.

OR, at least get it in a larger container, like a garbage can. Get it down deep enough to submerge the water pump which is in the first bulge above the flat anti-cavitation plate.

There is nothing you are going to clear out with a wire.
