Just bought Johnson 6 hp and need advice/help. Have ordered service and owners' manuals from Ken Cook, and some of this info may be covered there, but am impatient to get started.

I do have spark at both plugs. Good.

How do I check fuel punp? Can I rebuild it or do I need new unit?

How do I remove flywheel to work on points, etc?

How do I synchronize carb and ingnition?

What is the drill for starting this engine?

Has not been run for some time, turns over well with compression. Any handy hints for resurrecting it?

Many thanks,
Bednick

Take a look at the Engine FAQ for Awakening a sleeping outboard, Bednick.

Please wait for your manuals before you attempt to service it.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1967 johnson 6hp

Welcome Bednick!

There is an excellent FAQ called "Awakening A Sleeping Outboard" you should read. Will give you a place to start. It's in the main menu for under Boating Forums.

Removing the flywheel is best done with a harmonic puller. Don't use a gear puller. The harmonic puller uses the three screw holes in the flywheel. They'll be under that silver cup that the flywheel nut holds on.

Fuel pump servicing and carb/ignition sync&link is covered in the manual. Easy to do.

Three things I would like to stress.....service the carb (clean/rebuild) and replace the water pump and make sure there is no water and good lube in the lower unit. Many times folks will over look these things and end up with a pile of junk after the first time out.

The FAQ will get you started. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post them here.

Good Luck!!

Many thx for almost instant replies.

Waiting for manuals which are scheduled to arrive by Tuesday is a much needed exercise in patience.

Bednick
