well we went on a bit of a Boys-only-weekend and had some fun, my brother dad and i went "camping low-key-style" We rented a cabin for the night and went fishing. we set out at 6:00 in the morning saterday and headed up to north eastern lake simcoe and headed out on the lake, and after 5 hours or nothing And huge waves thet almost toppled out little boat we all decided to take a time out, we drove a bit further up and go to the casino(casino-rama).

My brother lost $80 i won $130 and my dad won a whopping $380. then we headed back down to the cabin and by that time the waves calmed down to nothing and the sky opened up, so we went back out on the lake. and after the second spot, i was driving the little 16' 1960's orange fiberglass boat with a 1967 Mercurey 500 50hp motor, i started it like normal and like usual it putted along at like 10km/p we where realy thinking or either renovating the damm thing(if the parts are still avalable) or getting a nice new(er)75hp...

well after heading out a bit further, I had my hand on the gear selector leaver and the throtle, well something clicked and the gearselector popped further forward taking the throtle with it...

The boat lunged forward and lept out of the water into the air, for the first time ever from when we had it the bow was out of the water and it was floating on the stern leaping on top of the waves??? I looked back like WTF? and my brother and dad looked at me then the roostertail that we where making so i throtled it backs after a little while and shut it off... Well neadless to say we where shocked that the foat asts like a boad and not like a log, this was the 10-20th time out and its never went faster then 20km/k, so imagin my surprise when we accelerated to 45-50...

Damm we might just keep the motor, i checked on ebay and the exact same motor was selling for 500-700..Holly crap i thought it was a terd cutter, now all i need is a fish finder so we can catch more then one perch(also cought by me)

and what caused this?, when i was pulling out of the harbor i popped the motor in reverse and as it turns out there is a licking claw that keeps it from popping up, well the bitcher job that the previouse guy did broke, abd it popped up and out of the water A) running it dry which is bad for the water pump and B) it broke the coat hanger wire crap that the last guy had onb the throtle cable that stoped limiting the engine abut i slso lost all throtle respone after that...

lol a good weekend. But now i have been searching fo about oooh 4-5 houres for a place to find some stock lines, it has a mercontroller and it seems to work odlt, when i push the gear selector forward it pullt the throtle back, the full actuation of the throtle as about 4" and all this time i have been using it at neat idle, or about an inch...

that motor should service you well. great engine, one of the longest runs merc did because of dependablity. be very careful opening the control box as the wire are going to be very brittle, might even be worth a new wiring harness. external and internal. (easy to do). here is a link for the control cables, throttle & shift. save the ends on the old cables. be sure to get the right length, and no sharp bends. if you have replaced the impeller, do so, no need to get stranded with a hot motor. and they are expensive to repair after running hot. http://www.iboats.com/Mercury_Mercr...d.250575--list_time.1180354428--view_id.40289

thanks for the link, im going to mesure it up and order right away, i also need a distributor cap, as its cracked at the botom, its definetly a good motor, the guy that owned it before us used it on and off with maybe 100 hours on it, now thats not realy good but its realy not used very much, whewre as we have about 30-40 so far and we only owned it for about a year and a half, buddy says that he never used fuel conditioner and he never fogged the engine o_O...ok?...

but on the plus side it looks to have new spark plugs(hope ngk are ok for it?) ands cables...

Tell you the truth, I'm thinking that if the the harness did fall apart, that would be great... I would love to make a new one... the trailer is also vintage 1960's, i replaced bolth wheels, and the wireing harness, i replaced it with a nice sheilded 4-in-one wire and trailer pots in the back and changed the light with 4 cool 4" led light... loos realy sharp, then we sanded it down primed it and gravel guarded it, now it realy dose look like a 1006 trailer(like it new regestration).

If you also have a link for a distributor cap that would be great, i already found a water pump kit and a gasket overhaul kit. but the water pump does run well, i put the muffs on it and it ran realy well.

ok my brother got a cable from a local source, its a 12 foot long one, ge got it on lickaddy split... but now we need a distributor cap and a set of wires, when he opened up the mercontroller there was a brittle rats nest of wires and someone had butchered it up. there was one that was the ground to the box and it was a near bars wire wrapped in electrical tape, so he cut it out and soldered, shrink-tubed and installed a new one...

noname.jpeg

well he noticed one of the wires comming from the distributor where cocked in a weird way... well he pulled it off to reposition it and it looks like this, so now i need new spark plug cables and new wires wires comming form the ignition module new light cables, distributor which isnt made anymore since its cracked, basicly a total rewire on everything, I'll get some more wires from work and make it a weekend, crimping solderings and shrink tubeing...

anyone else get turned on by that sort of thing. or is that just me.

some of those oldies the spark plug wires screwing the dist cap not just slip in. max rules.com, and oldmercs.com may be able to help you.
