Hello!

I was on as JimmyMac, but the change knocked me of for good apparently. I have a '67 650 4 cylinder (2207052) and MerControl control box which I am trying to take off of my project boat (which needs painting). Does anyone know if I have to remove the lower cowl to get the shift cable off? It looks pretty much like building a ship in a bottle to get at it with the cowl in the way.

Actually you do NOT need to remove the nut totally on the shift (throttle ya do)...just loosen it up. And on replace, don't tighten up..snug and back off 1/2 turn or more..they need to rotate a smidge..its a Nylock nut, and it won't come off. At least my early 70 135 is like that..

I took them both off before I got your second post. No troubles. I noticed light wear under the shift slide. Since I took it off already, I plan to clean this area and apply a marine grease where the washer slides.

I'm taking lots of digital pics of my disassembly so I don't go insane when I try to reassemble everything months from now. My last hurdle to pulling the motor off is to get the trim pump off.

Thanks!
