Found an ad for someone selling a 1967 merc 90 hp really cheap. PO claims to have run it a couple years ago yadda yadda yadda. Assuming it holds compression and lower unit is OK, is this a motor worth working on? Any special problems or idiosyncrasies? I'm familiar with OMCs, but a Tower would be a new beast for me.

I'm looking to repower a 17' Bowrider (see avatar pic). I've currently got a 70 hp Johnson on it, but it's definitely underpowered (rated for 130). "Parts not easy to find" is not encouraging.

The 1965 90 is not prop rated and your 70hp likely has more power than this engine...

check the condition of all the wiring for rotted insulation, look for the merc seal (a wire and lead billet on the starter side of block wired thru one of the bolts holding crankcase together (a none rebuild), check and see if the distributor is complete and is sending a hot spark, and if the compression is even in the 120psi range grab it, it is a BEAST

i would deffinatly go with the merc. they are much better designed and significantly more powerful then any other motor you will find. also on terms of power, back then these motors where rated at the prop and i can gaurentee it wil have more power then any other 90hp. the merc is the way to go!

Thanks all.

The person was selling a Larson runabout, trailer, and the merc for $100. Someone got to it before me, though.
