1968 35hp Chrysler

Having problems with my 1968 Chrysler 35 starter, It will turn over a couple of times and then quits and the negative battery cable will start smoking! Took starter off and hooked it up to battery and it spins! does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Do a compression test if that's ok then take the starter apart.That's assuming all the connections are good.J

check your cables for corrosion and do a voltage drop test for all major battery cables, then post your findings,hope this helps
