Thanks alot guys, your help is appreciated.. Do you know whether or not you have to disconnect the powerhead to get the driveshaft out for access to the water pump? And I can only find one grease fitting for lubrication, is this all there is. Thanks..

Nope....just take the attaching bolts out of the lower unit and let it drop.....not litterally. It was only on some of the older engines with F-N-R that you had to remove the power head so that the shift rod could be disconnected. I think they only had one grease fitting....just at the swivel tube.

And you should try and keep your posts' together. Kinda hard to follow if more than one. Thanks and Good Luck.

Alan, If you're asking about a single screw in the side of the lower unit for gear lude, you probably have only one. Remove, drain and fill from the single screw.

Unless that motor is different from all (about 25 years worth) the other 3hp years it has two screws for filling/venting the gear case. One on the gearcase to drain/fill and the other up higher (on the same housing the waterpump assy resides) for the overfill and vent. Both screws are on the same side and are the same size.

The drive shaft is splined on both ends and slides into the lower pinion gear just like it slides into the powerhead. Normally the head side slides out much easier and is the first to pull loose...but be aware of handling the drive shaft so it doesn't come out of the gearcase. If it does you MAY be able to slide it back in if the gear wasn't disturbed. This has happened to me twice but isn't a big deal even if you have to take the gearcase apart to line it up. These 3s are VERY simple and easy to work on.
