I have the online Seloc manual for the engine, but am a bit confused with the link and sync procedures.. I read some places to use a timing light, and a dial indicator at other places.. Suggestions?

Any help is much appreciated!

So far what you have read is right, you need a timing light and a dial indicator. The other thing you need is to get rid of seloc and get the Merc manual... The seloc is next to useless. It trys to cover too many models with too little detail. Search eBay for a genuine Merc manual for your engine, part # is 90-68647. (or get a new one from a Merc dealer or on-line store).

I don't have that manual, but I have done enough engines of a similar era to tell you the basics.

1. Set up the dial gauge to find TDC on cylinder #1, then turn the engine until the dial gauge indicates you are 0.464" before TDC. This is the set up for the timing pointer. Check that it is pointing at the '.464' mark on the flywheel. If it isn't, set it there.
2. Set the carb connecting lever so both carbs start to open at EXACTLY the same time. Set the throttle stop so the carbs are fully open, but not forcing the butterflys.
3. Again, without the book I'm not positive, but I think the next step is set the maximum timing. Once that's done, you'll be into the primary and secondary throttle pickups.
4. Then idle speed and mixtures....

Don't even try it without the book though... Buy the Merc manual, money well spent...
