1968 9.5 evinrude no longer spits out telltale

Hi All....
I changed the impeller when I bought it three years ago, & it was fine until yesterday...
When I started it, I noticed it was not spitting out of the telltale...
I pulled it apart & the impeller looked good, but I put a new one on anyway....
Still won't spit....
Any suggestions on where else to look?....Thanks!

Is the pump well submerged under water? Best of luck. Rick.

The telltale hole could be plugged up with an insect nest or something similar. Try poking it out (gently) with some soft copper wire.

I have the 69 model and I do believe there is a tell tale?? but water comes out the rear upper exhaust....... I can't access mine right now to look.

Is the motor running hot?

Maybe it has to do with the thermostat? Have you changed that or checked to see if it is working?

+1. No tell tale on that model. The water from the cooling system is expelled along with the exhaust. You can, however, add a tell tale to it. I just added one to my '66 20 hp and it works great. Only cost about $5 in bits and an hours worth of work.

Hi All....
I'm a dummy!.....
I sprayed a hose in both ends & saw water flow.....
What I didn't see was a piece of sea weed....
The first time around after reassembly, it was OK for a few minutes, then stopped spitting...
After taking it apart again, there was a bit of sea weed poking out through the bottom plate....
After pulling the keeper pin & lifting the plate there was the blockage......
I should have been more diligent with my initial examination...
So, it's up & running like a charm again....
These are great little motors, simple to work on & reliable...
