O.k. here is the scoop.. i've got a johnson 9.5 that i've been having trouble getting to pump water, i think ive narrowed it down to a grommet and a gasket at the base of the motor..how big of a deal is it to remove the engine so i can replace this gasket and grommet?? i guess what im asking is what how in the world does this thing come appart?? and is a job that a novice could do??(never been into one that far).. i would appreciate any advice i could get from someone that knows....thank you. also any parts i might need to replace while i have it apart.

seyahjr;

There are four different MQ-14s for 1968 with very little difference between them except for the two which are longshafts. I don't know if you have a parts listing but here is one which you can use to go through the components and tell us the p/ns or item numbers that you are trying to change.

This one is for the 1968 MQ-14D:

What work have you done so far? Have you changed the impeller etc.?

Thank you Carholme, i've changed the waterpump, and backflushed the head to be sure that it's not plugged, i remember up inside there it looked like there was a rubber grommet or something that the upper part of the water tube slid into...could my whole trouble be the jam nuts and washer being gone??i dont remember seeing them on there at all.(54 55 and 56 onthe schematic for gearcase) whatever is wrong with it is above the water pump...the water is pumping but not making it up into the head in other words..seyah

Yes, that end of the water tube must be sealed where the tube pushes in. I would presume that what is happening at the moment is that the leg is just filling with water if you don't have those items in there.

carholm..that would be awesome if that is all thats wromg with this little engine.. it has been a good one for sure..seems to me that when i looked up inside there there was a kind of "acordian" type rubber piece that was torn, but i couldnt see anything like that at all in the parts schematic...i have the motor reassembled at the time.. i'll order up those parts and work on that one next(right now i'm working on a 1954 johnson that was sitting for fourty years in a garage in iowa) thank you kind sir..seyah
