hello one and all..im working on a 68 9.8 which had a crank case leak where it joined together.
got that fixed but i now have a ever so tiny bit of play on the flywheel.
i checked both the keyways on crank and flywheel, looks fine...installed a new key,(which fit tight on crank)..
torqued down flywheel....but still have play..(hardley see it or feel it.)
is there anything i can use or do to get rid of that play, and is that the reason it will sometimes kick ( seems like a missfire)?
anyone got any ideas?
thanks very much

Where is the movement you are referring to as play? Rotational in relation to the crank? Longitudinal with the crank? Side to side?

I probably have one you're welcome to if you want it. I seriously doubt that's the problem, though. The "kick" is probably a lean sneeze if at idle; if at high speed it's probably a wire arcing to ground, bad spark plug (doubtful), other ignition component. How do you know there's all the play? There's probably supposed to be a tiny bit of play. If it's wobbling up and down it could be a bad taper on the flywheel or crank if someone over-torqued it in the past. I'd say that's not common. If kicking at idle, I'd clean and adjust the carburetor and check the check valves in the fuel pump for trash.

When you feel the " play " in the flywheel is it at TDC and BDC .------It would be near impossible to have play on the taper and key if torqued properly.
