Hey everybody, I have a 1968 Evinrude 55 that runs like a champ, cold starts fine, hot starts fine, planes my boat great (had boat 5 years).Last year maybe
the year before, started to stall whenever I go to lowest idle after extended WOT( 5-10 min). Doesn't seem to do it when I run a short distance.
If I remember correctly (don't have a manual) the low speed jets are turned out
5/8 of a turn from seated, sound right? Anyway I removed the 3 link adjuster
because the nylon is worn out so wouldn't work right, so to make adjustments I
will have to remove the silencer. Also noticed that at low troll speed I think it
may be lean sneezing.....whew....anyway the question is: should I just turn out the screws 1/8 of a turn at a time on sucssevive trips until it clears up or is there a way to set the low speed jets properly on muffs?

P.S. This a great site, there is a wealth of knowlegeable people here, any advice or discussion would be appreicated, thanks in advance.

I'm thinking that you're way too lean. Most initial setting are 1 1/2 turns of the needle valve from lightly seated. Try to achieve the highest rpm by successive 1/16 turn outward...then another 1/8 turn to prevent an lean condition.

From WTO to quickly idle in neutral is a test to determine if a lean condition is present...doesn't sound like you're passing it!

Idle should be set in the water and in gear.
