I have a 1968 55hp Evinrude that have almost 0 compression in the top cylinder. Popped the head to see whats what. There's definitely some damage. Wondering if it can be honed and rings replaced or if I should have it bored (assuming it's worth fixing)? The picture came out pretty good. I think it shows the damage. Any/all suggestions welcome.

Thanks!P1010022.jpg

Yes, good picture. However, it's hard to tell how bad the scoring might be. What I can see looks more like aluminum deposits from the piston which might flake off.

However, since the engine has to be torn down completely anyway, it might be worth your while to try honing it... perhaps you'll be one of the lucky ones. If not, then go the reboring route.

You're right about the aluminum. I took a small metal tooth scraper (like a dentist uses) and was able to flake some of it off. I also removed the exhaust cover to get a look at the piston. Rings are shot for sure. Piston looks scored. Should I replace it or just change rings?

Added a few more pics including what one of the good cylinders and pistons look like.

I would replace the piston. Actually, I wouldn't invest any money in this motor because I believe you could find a used outboard with a good powerhead that's lots newer for the price you will have tied up in a new piston, rings, gaskets, etc. And you still don't know if it needs reboring. If it does, it's that much more you'll have in it. If the motor has sentimental value, ignore my post.

Just my opinon,

No sentimental value. Can I really find something better for less?? The rings are $25 and the head gasket is $20. A new piston is about another $100. I'd have to throw another $100 or so at tools, gasket sealer, few other replacement parts maybe... I was thinking this would be as little as $100 and as much as $250. Am I missing something??

It can be done on the cheap... but it wont last neer as long.
I've cleaned the jug, quik hone, sand the ruff stuff off the piston, new rings and slap her back together.
It got me trough the last 3-4 weeks of the boating season and then I replaced the powerhead. I found an identical motor with ingnition issues but good compression for $50.

Honed the cylinders. They look pretty good. I'm pleasantly surprised. Ordered a new piston and rings for all three. Guess I'll see what happens in a few weeks when its back together.

Make sure you find out what caused the failure and fix the problem before it happens again.

Guess you're going to be one of the lucky ones huh? You've probably already checked BUT if not.... closely inspect the original piston tops to make sure they're what you think they are (Std or O/S). If standard, there will be no size markings, but if oversize, the size (.020, .030, whatever) will be imbedded which should be easy to spot.

Yes! I'm going to install a telltail while I have it apart. The heat signal is old and I'm sure not dependable. I'm going to make dam sure there's cooling going on.

Re: 1968 Evinrude 55hp. Low Compression in top cyl. Scorched sleeve

Thanks Joe, I didn't know that. I checked and there are no markings. Assuming this is the first time it was ever opened up. The paint on all of the bolts was original.

So far it looks like I got lucky. I want to keep honing until every spot is out. Are there any other recommendations on what to replace while I have it apart?

Replace gaskets of course and spark plugs.

Best to clean and rebuild those carburetors too. Be sure to manually clean the brass high speed jets that are located in the bottom center portion of the float chambers.

That type piston failure is usually due to a carburetor being fouled and running lean. Note the following carburetor ajustment procedure.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note 1: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

Note 2: If the engine should be a three (3) cylinder engine with three (3) carburetors, start the adjustment sequence with the center carburetor.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Do you happen to know what torque the crank bolts should be set to. I ordered a manual but looks like it will take some time to arrive.

Head bolts torque 18 to 20 foot pounds in the following sequence. What bolts are you referring to as "Crank Bolts"?

9....10
5.....6
1.....2
4.....3
8.....7
12..11 (Continue on in an ever widening circle)

NOTE... Use caution on the honing so as not to approach a situation whereas you actually go oversize.

The bolts that hold the connecting rods to the crankshaft.

http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-4075&ptype=&Engine=&Model=

Thanks for the head bolt info! I assume counting from the top, left to right and downward.

Connecting rod cap bolts = 29 to 31 foot pounds.

Head bolts = Start from CENTER LEFT bolt, then continue onward in a ever widening CIRCLE. The numbering indicates the bolts and the tightening sequence.

Re: 1968 Evinrude 55hp. Low Compression in top cyl. Scorched sleeve

Sigh ... so close yet so far. Ordered a new piston and 2 sets of rings. The rings fit great on original pistons. But the the new piston (OMC0386251) has a different sized wrist pin. Any idea how far in this has to be chased? Does it require a new Rod as well?

Tweaks me that they see this piston as a replacement without mentioning it isn't really a one to one swap.

Re: 1968 Evinrude 55hp. Low Compression in top cyl. Scorched sleeve

That's a real bummer for sure. My book states that the piston upgrade to 386251 includes the wrist pin and ring, however it does not state if "ring" means piston rings or wrist pin retaining rings. And as you state, it says nothing about a connecting rod.

In looking up the connecting rod part number of 382275, I see that it is superseded by part number 387465.

There was probably a service bulletin issued by OMC pertaining to this "upgrade" but I don't recall it at the moment. Should I come across it, I'll let you know.

Found an original (used) piston and rod on ebay. Have new rings so maybe I've lucked out. Will find out on Wednesday. The other two cylinders are tight. Have my fingers crossed!

Re: 1968 Evinrude 55hp. Low Compression in top cyl. Scorched sleeve

Last parts came in on Friday. Compression is good and the motor started right up :) Had a little trouble getting the low speed settings on the carbs. What a pain. I suspect the carbs will need to be rebuilt to get it running optimal. I can find all of the parts individually but not a rebuild kit. Any ideas on which parts are essential for rebuild?
