I have a 1968 Johnson 20hp that sprays fuel from a small hole near the top of the carburetor on the side. It sprays when I squeeze the primer bulb and when it starts. Is there supposed to be a plug in there or does the carb need rebuilt?

Sounds like the float valve isn't closing.Yes a carb rebuild is in order.
Be sure that all passages and jets are clean.

Uriah..... Better to enter your question under your own entry, however.......

You have either set the float level wrong OR the air vent to the float chamber is clogged. Ants and bees will clog that vent hole (honest).

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Alrighty, ill check those. Thanks so much for the help, didnt mean to butt in on your question bjs65stang. I thought since the carbs were very similar, we could share fixes that weve tried etc. Thanks guys, take care.

I have this same motor. I purchased several manuals for it, one is the original shop manual. Yes is needs to be pluged, they used lead shoot like you will find in a shot gun shell, looks to be a 7 1/2 shot. Yours probally vibrated out. In the manual it shows to dig it out with a dental pick. To instal it use a flat small punch smaller than the shot or carb hole.

milla NOT!! it is the overflow for the carb, suppose to be there. his float was out of adjustment, and flooding the carb. this is a 9 month old thread.
