1968 Johnson 40hp--does it have a tell tail?

I got my motor running and the electric shift now works!

When running the motor I didn't notice a tell tail. I didn't want to risk overheating it, so I shut it off. I was using ears.

I assumed the water inlet was the small rectangle screen on the left side of the motor. Am I correct?

I had checked the water impeller when I had the lower unit off and it looked ok. Could it be bad still. I was going to replace it to be sure. I was wondering if I could have another problem.

Thanks

No tell tale on that motor. It comes out of the exhaust relief hole that is half-way up the rear of the leg. The best way to run that is in a trash can filled up real high, not just barely over the prop.
A new impeller is always a good idea when you don't know how old the other one is.

Thanks. Got a trash can and was able to run the motor. Like you said, mist/splash out the port. Ran for awhile while checking the head with my hand. The head got warm, but never too hot that I couldn't hold my hand on it.

Thanks
