great forum. am looking at an old 1968? Johnson 40hp seahorse electromatic. will get model/serial# later. before i buy anyone know
1. where the solenoids/controls for the electric shift are located on the engine (owner said it ran 3 yrs ago, but had 'shifting' problems)?
2. is the power to the shift coming from the battery?
3. where i can get discontiued parts for this engine?
4. where i might find a manual for this engine?

would really like to get this going but have never delt with electric shift. have read all posts here on subject...seems semi convoluted but manageable if i could just find out where the **** thing is. thanks.

Don't want to discourage you but I would look a little farther and come up with a manuel shift.
Go to top of page and do a search on them and you will find that most post say they are problematic
Never owned one myself but have read many posts on this site on them

Sundog....babbakat has a real good point. You may end up poorer by the time you get the engine fixed. The parts for the old electric shifts aren't cheap....even used. Just the shift switch in the control box runs around $57. Partner....I'd think twice. At least take take it to a mech before you buy and get an estimate on parts.....at least.
