if its not one thing its aonther,
now when i trun the key to start the motor all i hear is a knock in the power pack i think either way the starter is not turning and just a knock

i thought it might be because it wasnt in nutral but it seems that this motor has to crank to get into nutral, right now its stuck in the forward position and i cant crank it

its a brand new battery with lots of volts to run that starter and it just ran the other day so i have no idea why its not cranking
any help?

Actually, it is properly called an "amplifier" not a power pack on that motor. Whatever, I would be inclined to think the knock is in the starter solenoid which is right next to the amplifier. If so, that says either the solenoid is bad (not making contact across the big terminals) or else the starter motor is bad, or else a bad ground.

First things first, check the cable connections at both ends. Make sure they are clean and tight. Don't just assume. Poor connections can destroy the amplifier and/or alternator rectifier, so be warned! Also, make sure the cables themselves aren't corroded inside the coverings.

Once you are dead sure the cables are OK, try using a jumper cable directly from the battery positive terminal to the starter motor. It should spin if the starter motor is good.

Go to Engine FAQs, noidea. "Outboard won't start" will troubleshoot it for you.

Good luck. :)
