1968 Johnson 85hp starter issue

My father has this engine and he asked me to post this question. The starter on this engine will only engage occassionally and when it does engage the engine starts and then kills almost immediately. Starter has had new brushes put in recently. 1st thought was bendix spring but now not so sure any other opinions? does the Bendix move up and down as it should? maybe a little lite oil on it, worked to free up mine. dieing out may be another issue.
