Hello
I took my 1968 Johnson 9.5 out to the lake today for its maiden voyage. (at least since I have had it) It had been sitting for some years before I got it and took a lot of my time to get it running. Long story a little shorter, The engine Cranks usually on the 1st or 2nd pull and seems to run just fine in the barrel that I use at the house. Today when I took it out, as usual it cranked right up. The first thing I noticed is that it seemed to not have nearly as much power as I had imagined it would with my little john boat. Also I quickly noticed that the engine would die if I moved it off of choke even a hair. Never the less it seemed to run well in the choke position and I really wanted to run it a little hoping that it would warm up and the choke could be moved and hopefully the full potential of the motor could be reached. There were a few times, right when I started it up that it revved up and had some real pep but it quickly died off. After heading off a ways from the boat ramp I noticed that it started running a little rough. Knowing that something was already wrong since it would only run when choked I decided to head back to the ramp. The engine continued to get rougher and rougher and eventually died. I got it restarted with the cowling off but to keep it running I had to nurse the choke valve with my finger (to keep it closed) so that it would run long enough to get me back to the ramp. The only thing that I can think of is that there is an adjustment that needs to be made or I have a jet clogged. I have not had a chance to check yet. One other question I have is about the needle valve on the low speed knob. How does this work. I cannot get mine to turn and I have tried to remove it for cleaning and cannot seem to get it out and I did not want to destroy it in the process. Any help on would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
