I am going to look at a 68 johnson 9.5 this weekend and was wondering if there is anything in particular I should look for other than the usual compression, gearbox, coils, etc?

If there is a "common" problem with the 9.5s it is exhaust gasket failure that leaks exhaust into the cowling and kills the engine.

Ok, well how would I determine if this motor is leaking exhaust into the cowling? Does this destroy the motor, or just kill it while running?

look for evidence of exhaust gas in the cowling (e.g. smoke/oil stains)

It's not so much the exhaust gasket as it is the shift shaft seal. It's going to be tough to figure out in a barrel, since that motor will almost always suck up exhaust gasses in a confined space. Also, that seal is just about impossible to see w/ disassembling the motor.

Run it in a barrel. If you experience some, but not a lot, of effect from exhaust gasses you're probably okay.
