1968 Johnson f d 22 m lower unit

I am rebuilding the lower unit on this motor , everything going ok, ( minor issues) however under the water pump is a seal , I removed that , and under that is a caged needle bearing for the shaft, I cannot find this part on any diagram, I would of expected a bronze bushing , that being said ,could anybody shed some light on this, thank you in advance for your help, Eric

As near as I can find out they started using a bearing in the 28 hp and up.

Thanks wrench, very possible this is not original lower unit , I will look at those lower units for the part , it is like trying to crack the davinci code

Ok looks like a 1970, here is a part number, 0383829, are the lower units that interchangeable? I am new to these old motors ,thanks

Perhaps you are not aware but that motor was basically the same from 57 to 76.----Many parts interchange from year to year.

If you need to replace the bearing and can't find one at a dealership, take the bearing with you to a bearing supply house (like Kaman Bearing) and they can match it up for you by dimension, or by reading the number off the casing (if legible). Often they'll get you the same bearing for a lot less than the dealer...
