Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me why my carburetor is spitting out gas when hooked up to fuel tank and stops but continues running for a minute or so. The engine starts up immediately but then spits out gas again when hooked to tank. Is this a stuck float or simply another setting. It is a 1968 40hp Johnson RDS-22.

Thanks for any help with this!!!!!

Happy boating to all!

If it is infact an RDS-22, then it is a 1960 model. It probably still has those compression release valves on the heads? As far as your carb issue, that looks like a float problem to me. I just fixed that same issue last weekend on my RDS-21 On mine, I had to bend the tab to keep the float from dropping too far, because fuel was flowing out the front, when I primed it. Where the float attaches to the carb, you'll see a tab that goes straight up. Just take a screw driver and push that in, till you have just a small space there. This will allow to float to drop about 1/2" when the carb is dry of fuel.

Sounds like the float is stuck or there's a piece of debris under the float valve keeping it from shutting down the fuel flow. The low speed needle valve should be open approximately one and a half turns.

You should start your own thread. But it does sound like your needle valve is sticking open.

And the needle, seat, and float are inside the carburetor. It needs to be disassembled to get at these parts. A service manual (not an operators manual) for your specific engine is your friend if you intend to work on this or any other engine yourself.
