What engine are we working on?
First thing I would be checking is the voltage to the coil with the engine running around 1500 rpm. If the alternator is defective you could have a very high voltage going to the coil.
I would look into the possibility of there being a bad ground to the coil.
If the coil is accually exploding, you have voltage going to it all the time, even with the key off.
Turn off the key and check the pos wire for voltage, there should be none. with the key on you should have about 9 volts, and cranking you should have 12 volts.
there should be a ground wire from the disbuter to the coil and a ground wire to neg of battery
There is no such thing as a ground wire for the coil.
The + terminal is voltage in, the - terminal is for power out to the distributor. That is it. If you have a wire going to ground, then that is why your coil is blowing up and the engine won't start.
The only other wire to the - terminal would be the wire to the tachometer. Not sure what color it was in 68. Might disconnect the tach lead and see if it will run. A shorted tach can cause problems.
should the +connection on the coil have 12v to it if the key is off?
No
check your battery cable where it attaches to the starter. See if it is touching the small terminal on starter solenoid.
That is one of the possibilities. but not the only one.
If the cable is not touching, disconnect the main engine harness and see if the power is still on. Then we will at least know which direction to go. Don't want to sit here all day typing every possible thing that could happen.
this is what i found that the battery wire was rubbing on the small termerial so i fix that. now there is no power there know.
Is it cranking and not starting, or not cranking. Big difference and why I started with the terminology.now i try to start motor and it still wont start.
It will not crank when i turn the key know. But put a jumper wire from the battery termial to the small termial and turn the key and the motor starts cranking. but the motor still will not start. so since i had to jump starter is the starter bad .Lets get the terminology straghtend out first.
Cranking= motor turning over with starter but not running
Starting = motor runs.
You crank the motor till it starts.
What I expected and why I didn't want to type all the possibilities.

Do you have spark ????? I doubt it. since the starter had power to the coil all the time and finally blew the coil up, I would bet money the points and condenser are all fried also. Replace them, set the dwell and bet it will start.
