1968 Merc 60 6hp making "sputter" sound

1968 Merc 60 6hp motor has been running fine but all of a sudden it let out a loud "PFFFFTTT" one or two times and it cut off. Not really sure how else to explain it. The motor runs fine after letting it sit awhile but eventually begins the sputtering again. Any ideas??

I Don't think a 60 horsepower Merc was manufactured in 1968. JR

the model is a Merc 60. It's a 6HP...

the only thing I can think of is that it's starving for fuel.
