1968 Mercury 500 50 hp tachometer hook up

I recently purchased the correct Mercury tach for this motor and after plugging it into the control, I followed the brown wire back to the motor where it has been cut and is sitting there, What does the tach hook to in the motor, the control box red white or blue lugs? or something else from the distributor ?

My Seloc manual shows the brown wire changing to orange at the engine plug and then goes to the blue lug.

That is for a type 2 ignition system.

Thanks Mark, I will give that a try, the wire does look to be orange once inside the engine.
