1968 stinger ball gears

Can the ball gear alone be changed on the shaft complete unit is #0383177 which is pretty much extinct in my search anyways.

Did you check with Crowley marine? They may have what you need.
Yes the ball gear is a separate and can be pressed off. After 72 the ball gears were held on with a nut.
