Hey gang. I have been working on this little beast for a few months and have sought and recieved guidance from this forum several times and it is greatly appreciated. To date I have changed spark plug, spark plug wire, coil, condenser and points. Recently got a carb kit and completed that chore as well as cleaning carb. Problem: Wouldn't start until I sprayed pre-mix direct into carb and it actually ran for quite a while. Took a few cranks but it got going However it ran rough and only ran when the choke was closed. When i opened the choke it started to smooth out but then died. Set the low speed to 1 1/2 turns counterclock wise and the high speed 3/4 turn as per Solec manual.

Any advice what to do next?

I think you still have a carb problem.I'd look at the idle passages. And the fuel supply from the tank.

DHP

I agree 100% with DHPMarine. Just to elaborate on a point, the Seloc leaves out probably the most important step when carb cleaning:

Disassembling:
Your new carb kit ought to come with replacement, slightly convex core plugs. Before proceeding, make sure they're they are the same size as as the ones you are about to remove. If all is well, drill a 1/8" hole in the centre of each core plug. Then insert a small screwdriver or nail through the hole, and pry the plug out. It is very important that while drilling and prying, you do not let anything damage the surfaces underneath the plug. So restrict the drill bit from piercing much more than 1/16" beyond the core plug.

Assembling:
Coat the outside edge of the core plug with a slight amount of fuel proof gasket sealer. (Although this step isn't strictly necessary, I find it helps seal the plug and saves problems down the road.) Now place the plug convex side up atop the boss where the plug rests. Then, using a small drift and hammer, tap the top of the core plug so it expands until it jams tightly against the core plug's socket. Give it one extra tap for good measure.

Chances are that the low speed circuit is still blocked and where it's most likely blocked is behind that plug. If you still have the plugs that came in the kit, you won't need a new one.

Thanks DH and Paul. Just went out and adjusted the packing nuts as I had not done them right the first time. They weren't on tight enough. Both high and low speed. Now it does start with the choke open but runs a little rough but i will follow up with your suggestions tomorrow. Thanks again.

Paul I checked and i did not get the core plugs with my carb kit and I can't find them on the diagrams in the manual. Where would they be and what would they look like? Thanks

Part number 6:

If you can get it to smooth out without adjusting the low speed control wildly (ie, out more than 1-3/4 turns) then don't worry about it.

Hey Paul. I do have that part in the kit but had no idea where it went. Thanks for the info. If I can't get it to smooth out I will do as you suggested.

Amazing site here and great knowledge base.

Have a great day
