just out of curiosity, how would a well tuned, well maintained 69 25 hp sportster perform when stacked up against modern era 25 hp engines? is it a quality engine worth holding on to or are the newer ones that much better?

Pretty close, although since 1985, motors from OMC/BRP are HP rated @ the prop shaft, rather than crankshaft. In simple terms, the new ones are ~ 5 to 7% more powerful for the same labeled HP. The newer motor also have electronic ignitions, considered an advantage by some, but not a significant performance advantage.

The '69 is a better outboard, at least partly because it has a serviceable magneto.

The '69 may be a better motor (and maybe easier to work on) but finding parts can be challenging for equipment this old. I just ordered an amplifier for a '69 Evinrude 55 (model 55873R) but paid a lot for it new. If the selectric shift lower unit goes out I'm not sure what I'll do.

Dont lump the 55 selectric/hydro electrics in with the 25 hp comparison. Theyre an entirely different beast. And have known electrical "issues". Id say the older 25 is the way to go, if u get a new evinrude etec, forget about working on it- it requires a dealer computer to do anything.

Can you explain what electrical "issues" in particular? Maybe pm me with that?
