1969 25hp Evinrude - Water Pump ?? after mini-rebuild

Tonight, I cranked my Dad's 1969 25hp after completing a mini rebuild/restore job. New ignition parts, kill switch, hoses, impeller, thermostat, carb rebuild, gaskets, paint, etc. This was my first attempt at doing anything like this and all the neighbors swore I'd never get it back together. It smoked like crazy when I cranked it, but appeared to run pretty smooth. But I don't see any water coming out of the exhaust port. I think I put the impeller in correctly, but again it was the first time I'd ever seen one, .... so I could have messed it up. I did not put it in gear. How do I go about debugging this? Does the thermostat have to kick in before water flows around the head? Of course I didn't run it too long, but the head appeared to be plenty hot enough to start calling for water.

there are alot of things you could have missed theres a long water tube that come from the powerhead down to the waterpump, you could have missed it or it could even be rotted.....either way take your time ....she looks great, any other ? give me a shout at bassboattech.com

I think the water tube was metal. I think it's in there okay, but I'll check. Forced air is a good idea, but I gave it a really good wash when I had everything broken down. I can't use muffs on this model ... can I? Exactly where is the water intake? Is there anyway to flush this motor? Is the exhaust the only tell-tale?

Thanks.

Your pic pretty much explains the problem. Just fill the water bucket up about three inches below the exhaust relief and I'll bet it will pump like crazy. The water level in your pic isn't even close to high enough to get that pump to prime.
Super nice motor!!!! I'd LOVE to have a '69 25hp!!!!!
Good luck and nice work,

BTW,
Yes, the exhaust relief is the only water flow indicator. NO tell-tale on that motor. I personally like the exhaust relief just fine since it gets stopped up like.......never.:)

That engine looks in great shape. I just picked up a '70 22 cu in 25hp this summer, but mine's partially seized and in rough shape :( Need's work!

Thanks Mr. JB. Never new the pump had to be primed. I'll fill it up really high and give it another try.

Still - where is the water intake? Also, can I flush it out with a hose?

Thanks again.

water intake should be just behind the prop on the front side of exhaust port

I'm going to chalk this up to the "pump not primed" response.

Thanks for all the help. As suggested, I raised the water as high as I could and now it's at least spitting water out of the exhaust. I suspect I'll get more flow when the boat is under way. As you can see, ..... lots of smoke. I'm sure I'll be opening another thread on how to tune this thing up. I'll dork around with it for a while first. Right now, it stalls after 30-45 seconds. Tank bulb appears to not stay firm. ??? Also, I noticed a fizz leak around the carb float tank area when I pump up the bulb. I DID NOT put any gasket sealant there because everyone said it would gum up the carb. ????? So now I'm off to tune this thing up. All suggestions are welcome. Remember, I'm a newbie.

Thanks for all the help.

You should be able to hold your hand on the cylinder head for at least 3 seconds without screaming or it's too hot. That motor has a thermostat-----just something to think about. THe thermostat shouldn't have any effect on how much water is coming out of the exhaust relief. Be careful you don't run it hot. Check it with the old hand routine (be careful!!) regularly until you have driven in on the water and have confidence the cooling system is working properly. Go ahead and rebuild the carb with a kit and change your fuel lines if you haven't already. Be sure you don't lose the little nylon friction piece that keeps the choke lever all the way out so that the choke is fully closed or it will be a son of a gun to crank cold. Try to get the kit that includes a new plastic float if your carb doesn't already have a plastic float inside it. If it has the plastic float, you can probably get by with just a good cleaning. It has a fixed high speed jet and it must be spotlessly clean to run right wide open without running lean which can ruin it. If you don't have a special screwdriver to take out the high speed jet, then leave it in and clean it out with a good soaking in carb cleaner and some piano wire and compressed air. IF you try to remove it with a regular screwdriver, you WILL screw it up.
Good luck,
JBJ
