A elderly friend asked if I could help find a l/u for this motor...#33953. The boat is at a lake faraway and there's a mech that says the l/u is frozen so I said I would help find the parts. I can look on ebay but I don't know what years and hp l/u will work. It's a manual shift she says, so any help will be appreciated. Tia :)

Re: 1969 33hp l/u

I'm afraid niether of them will work.
Needless to say, any 33hp gearcase should work. I think that the 40hp mechanical gearcase used in the 60's and early 70s is a perfect fit too and it should be easily found. But I have no way to be sure which is why I havn't posted a reply. You're looking for a split-line gearcase, where the bottom half is held on by a bunch (7) screws.
This would also be the same LU as the fifties 35hp. The post-57 35hp and 40hp engines use a different water pump from the 33hp since it has no thermostat and therefore is a single line pump, but I don't think that would be a problem.

Hope this helps a bit!

Hi cheif
Both of those gear cases are too new, neither will fit. You need something between 1959 35-40hp to 1969 33,40 hp. There may be differences depending exactly what you get. The water pumps are different on the 40hp models. Also be aware of differences in drive shafts. Sometimes the the splines don't match, or one shaft will be a hair longer. Not enough to tell by looking, just enough to preload the crank. To be able to give you all the possible gear cases that will fit with a 100% sure answer would require hours of research. We're talkin manual shift gear cases here.

Thanks...that's what I needed to know, I'll just keep looking. I don't have the unit here to repair or find parts for, so unless I find one from the same model I guess I'll pass. I also don't know the abilities of the mechanic that has the motor now so I don't want to send him anything that will cause any grief. again, thanks

Re: 1969 33hp l/u

So now these folks brought this boat over to my shop so it will be in my way until I can fix it. What happened is fishing line on shaft, seal eroded, water intrusion, cold winter, case cracked, run with only water for lube, set for 5 months.
Frozen bearings...I should have no problem identifying the propshaftshaft bearings for replacement, but the driveshaft bearings are gonna come out in small pieces so id for replacement will be tough to say the least.
If anybody knows where I can find new roller bearings for the top case...3 of them...I would be greatful.
I still might find a used l/u, but up to this point what I have found is either overpriced, or not in very good condition...thanks :)
