On this motor is there only one "speed" adjustment on the carb? I have only a single needle located at top of carb, which I presume is the Low Speed idle adj. This needle was loose on my carb which may explain why it stalled at low speed then wouldn't start?. There is not nut or any other parts to hold the needle in. From pics i could find should these these carbs have two adjustments, (low and high)?. I think I can source the parts needed to keep the needle secure and in place, but what is the recommendation from you experts? Since the needle is completely loose, should I remove and clean with rubbing alcohol, then reinstall it as follows: ?. if I recall, I should insert and screw it gently in until the needle is seated, then back of 1 1/2 turns, then adjust with motor warm with 1/8th turns to see where the sweet spot is. Is that correct?... thank you iboats...

update: I found some parts that came with the motor and yes there is a carb cover and I guess the parts that are needed to properly keep the needle in place - however does anyone have a drawing of this particular carb of what parts are needed and in what order (packing nuts/etc) is there a spring involved too ? (there is a small 1/2 inch long spring)

and how pointed should that nozzle needle be? I compared it to and older nozzle needle from the early 28 hp 60's and the earlier needle is much more pointed than the one on this 1969 40 hp

1968 is as close as I can get. Close enough. And don't messing with the needle taper unless you have darn good reason to.

thank you - not sure what was inside as far as 55, 56, 57 (bushing, packing, washer. )- is 55 bushing washer a rubber washer about 1 cm long?, 57 is a nylon washer? and 56 is a rubber washer but typical thin washer?

Prior to seeing this post I did insert what I thought was 57, but just one. The needle is now tighter but safe to assume if I put two in it will be tighter, as well as confirm that bushing washer is in there.

What's the easiest way to remove whatever washers are in there without tearing them apart?

Just took it for another test drive and I need to get that needle nozzle tighter, as it moves with the vibrations. attached is the picture of parts that I got along with the carb cover. I am assuming carb cover is not required to keep nozzle tight, as the bushing and washers should do that job, correct. I do not think the thicker washer shown is the bushing as it is to larger a diameter to fit inside. Would the second washer (57) solve my issue and make the needle nozzle tighter?

go it, thank you. nozzle needle now tightens nicely along with the packing nut. What's the easiest way to tighten my throttle control?
