I recently bought a 1969 sea king boat with a 1969 sea king 55 hp motor made by chrysler. The lower unit was leaking so I replaced the seals. I am having trouble adjusting the shift linkage. The brass yoke keep wearing out after minimum use. The gears and bearing seem to be in good use. Any Suggestions???

Re: 1969 55 hp Sea King Shift problems

If you dont have a manual you should get one!
Im no expert on the chrysler but:: Book says with shift lever(not remote) shift through f-n-r detent positions and mark the intermediate shift link where it emerges from the leg. "F-N-R" if marks are not evenly spaced caused by interference adjust the turnbuckle connector until interference is eliminated.Another thought is if the shift cable is adjusted wrong it could be out of the detent position stressing the yoke.
The yoke is probably wearing most on one side figure if forward or reverse and it may help in the adjustment.
