I have a 1969 650 65hp 4 cylinder Thunder bolt. I want to put a new Impeller on, some have said to put it in Forward, Reverse, or Neutral. My Manual says Forward to drop lower unit. Can you tell me what one to use. Also book says to take the prop off, I don't see why I can't just drop it with it on, but I am a newbie. Main thing Is I just don't want to screw up my shifting when I put it back together. Any Info on that would be very nice. Thanks For any Info Guys

DANO--I have found it best to remove the prop first. This makes it easier to handle and put in a vise or to prop-up against something while doing the repair. Also when you change out the impellar you will need to rotate the drive shaft and if the LU is in forward then the prop will turn also limiting the amount of rotation.. Additionally if for some reason you drop the LU on the ground you will not damage the prop blades. I place my throttle in full forward when I drop the LU and tape the shift shaft in place so it will not move during impellar replacement. This way it all lines back up pretty easy when you reinstall it.
