I have a 1969 85hp evinrude(85993) with push button electric shift. Upon trying to start the motor it attempts to run backwards(not every time). I am going to pull the flywheel and check the anti-reverse spring! If it is broken, is the timing now off? If it is out of time then what is the best method for checking the timing?

Re: 1969 85 evinrude timing question?

I pulled the flywheel this afternoon and one of the contacts on one of the points is loose(I believe it is broken) so I will replace that point. This set of points only has about 15 hrs. on them for I replaced them last year! Should I replace both points if I am replacing just the one point? Is the timing adjusted according to the setting of the point gap? I also peeked at the anti-reverse spring and I am not sure if it is in good working order or not! Is the spring supposed to be open(split) at one end?

pjw
