smoke comming from the amplifier is not a good thing. Better check you wiring and make sure it is wired right, it does not take much to short out an amplifier and the thing costs in excess of $300.00. If you do not have a manual I suggest you get one as soon as possible. Also be sure you are not using a maintance free battery as they have a tendency to over charge and will fry the amplifier.

Re: 1969 85 HP Johnson Question

Clymers does not show a test for the starter seloniod but does show a test for cd amplifier for a 1969 85 hp johnson or evinrude here is what it says you need a cd test meter available at your dealer ( I do not know if a standard meter would work of not) connect black testor wire to a good ground. insert the red testor lead into the red terminal of the amp turn on the switch test meter should read 12 volts crank engine volt meter should read 9.5 volts or more
with a fully charged battery. Note make sure you have taken steps to keep the engine from running while performing thsi test. Next amp output test
connect black lead to a good ground. set meter to 500 volt scale insert red testor probe into blue amplifier wire that goes to the coil. Next crank engine and meter should read 250 volts or more. hope this helps you out
