I picked up this monster with the intention of "broadening" My outboard learning.. plus the price was right 50$

problem is I hear the Electric shift motors are crap. also... its missing carbs, all electrical components with the exception of the lower unit shift wires, no flywheel no stater , distibuter cap, power packs coils, prop, and air box.

Should this be my "parts" motor? if so, should I only look at 85 motors? or will other years/HPs, be compatible?

dont need a full break down of "what will fit" and what wont.. but general pointing in a direction is all I need and Ill start digging.

Finally should I keep the electric shift lower unit? or should I find/convert to regular?

You bought a motor that has already been cannibalized. It isn't even a good parts motor.

Electric shift is wonderful.----Well engineered / reliable / simple and easy to fix.-----That is my opinion and many will argue about that.-----Do a complete inspection.----Find your parts cheap on E-bay.

That a small bore 85Hp and unless you find another 69/70 yr a lot of parts wont interchange. You will send more on parts getting it running than motor is worth, plus what the compression??? Why was it parted out?

Not worth working on for most shops.------Great satisfaction for some to get it done as a hobby so to speak.

You can inspect one side of the piston and the rings by removing bypass covers.------Just 6 bolts on each cover.

I ran the '70 version for many years with no issues, both fresh and salt water. Use Premium Mix in the gearcase (specifically for electric gear cases). For layup while looking for parts, you might fill the case with ATM to clean, then drain and fill with the proper oil when ready to run. If you can find a '69/'70 flywheel, you will be able to pull it over with a rope or sash cord for testing compression.

There is not much if anything that is similar between a 1969 model 85 HP and a 140 of 1977 and newer !!

Can’t you check compression by putting nut on crank and run with drill??

Just look at the 140 HP flywheel.----See if it can be used on the 85 HP to do a compression test.------Note ---Only to do a compression test with starter or a rope on the flywheel.
