I have a 1969 85hp evinrude that I just replaced the impeller on! I ran it until it was warm enough for the temperature warning light to come on and immediately shut it off! The water coming out of the two pee holes was hot! I assume since the water(muffs) going into the motor was cold to begin with and then hot that the thermostat is
working properly!! If anybody has any suggestions that would be much appreciated!

pjw

if watepump is working and tstats are ok take of the heads and replace waterflow restrictors.
easy job will cost you 2 new headgaskets and 4 rubber restrictors about 50 dollars total.
if that doesnt help you water passages might be clogged

reeldutch

I had the impeller replaced at the end of last year and took it out a few times afterwards and it ran fine! I started it up earlier this year and after a second time running it, the temperature warning light on my dash lit up so I shut it down. I took off the lower unit to inspect and the key that holds the impeller to the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Other than that, the impeller looked to be in good shape as one would expect! I am not sure if the t-stat is ok or not! I do know that the impeller was not operating properly before I replaced the driveshaft key for I was not getting any water out of the pee holes and now I am but the warning light came on again! Maybe the 35-year old warning sensor is faulty??? Any suggestions on checking the temperature with a different method!!

Thanks, pjw
