i recently bought a 1969 glassmaster boat w/
an evinrude 85 hp starflite w/ hydro-electric
shift. the boat has been sitting for 8 0r 9 yeari tried to start the motor but it would barely crank tried to put the motor in neutral but it was
stuck in forward. i then assumed it was the solenoids but i pulled the LU and checked them
and they were ok. i have a couple of questions as to what might be the problem. does the stater have to be engaged before the hydro shift will work? how does the solenoids/shift rod engage the
gears at the oil pump? if i put the lower unit back on can i fill it w/ dexronIII to maybe loosen
up the gearcase??

The driveshaft has to spin for the hydroelectric to shift gears. I have gotten them to shift just turning the flywheel with a wrench, or turning the driveshaft with a (padded) pair of vicegrips. Applied voltage, started turning, and 3 or 4 revolutions later it shifted. Obviously you do have to have fluid in it.

The solenoids open/close some valving to route fluid, then the fluid pushes & that's what drives the shift mechanism. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I haven't had one apart. Anyway, there is no mechanical fallback to the hydraulic action (like there is with the hydromechanical LUs and the power steering in a car), if the servos & hydraulics don't work, it doesn't shift.

The dextron idea won't hurt anything & may loosen things up. However, if it was hardly cranking it might be just that it needs to turn more/faster. You can bench test it with the LU still off (use a padded pair of vicegrips on the middle of the driveshaft, turn CLOCKWISE looking down from the top). Apply 12V to green lead for neutral, both leads for reverse.

Andrew.... The following may be of interest to you.

(Hydro Electric Shift)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Preminum Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).

With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP I'LL TRY THE DEXRON SINCE THE UNIT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR SO LONG
AND I'LL TRY SWITCHING GEARS WITH THE SPARK
PLUGS REMOVED. THANKS AGAIN!! I'LL LET YOU KNOW
IF I GET IT ON THE WATER.
