New to boats, could use some insight.

Picked up a new (to me) boat today i found on craigslist. Its a 17ft Alumicraft, fiber glass hull. Tittle says it was new in 1970. Its in really great shape i thought for being 17 years older than myself. After seeing it in person i couldnt pass it up. All in all i spent 300$ for the boat, engine, trailer. Id say its the best deal im ganna find.

Came with a 85hp Evinrude that ran last year but needs a new power pack according to the previous owner.

Im new to this whole marine engines thing. Is there anyway i can test to make sure this is what it is?

The motor is in beautiful shape, Very clean and well maintained. I have no gas tank or battery in it as of right now.

How would i tell its the power pack once i get a battery and fuel tank in it? Or can i tell with an Ohm meter?

After reading through the FAQs in the top secret area i think i have covered most things on the motor as general maintenance goes. Anything else i should look into as far as the electric shifting and such? I know it will take a different oil in the lower unit.

Much thanks for any insight.

The link below is to the Mastertech Marine website. They have lots of good info available.

Before you spend any money on it, be sure to check the compression for the best indication of overall mechanical condition. Every motor "ran last year" according to most previous owners!

Here's a link to what should be the correct wiring diagram. Looks like points under the flywheel.
