1969 Evinrude 40 hp, Selectric shifter...won't

During a fishing derby my husband put the shifter into reverse and it wouldn't change into<br />other gears after that. Apparently it went into forward when he first went out but later<br />wouldn't come out of reverse. Amateur mechanics at best, could anyone give us tips on what<br />could be wrong? <br /><br />Thanks in advance.

Could be anything from wrong gear oil or a leaky gearcase, to a bad switch ,to a broken wire or bad connection, to a bad ground,to the shift solenoids finally giving out on this old girl.Check the condition of your gear oil first. If there are signs of water thats a good place to start. If not refill it with the appropriate electric shift gear oil and see what happens.
